"An Ordinary Man, Your Mr. Schultz"
Jun 02, 2008
bkoganbing - imdb.com
Billy Bathgate is based on E.L. Doctorow's historical novel about New York in the Thirties. Doctorow also authored Ragtime and while this film isn't as gaudy and expensive as Ragtime, Billy Bathgate is an accurate recreation of the times of post... Full review
Gangster film just above average
Sep 08, 2007
gcd70 - imdb.com
Mark Isham, of Windham Hill fame, has written a powerful, sweeping and moving score to accompany Robert Benton's gangster show, "Billy Bathgate", which unfortunately falls well short of that description. Although Benton tries hard, along with Dustin Hoffman, Loren Dean and... Full review

It's kind of shocking to see less than 20 reviews (as of March, 2006) for a movie that stars Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman and also has Bruce Willis and Loren Dean. This story of gangster "Dutch" Schultz is told, like... Full review
Hoffman Rules!

Through a chance meeting in the street, our hero Billy Bathgate (Loren Dean) encounters and impresses the notorious 1930's gangster and bootlegger Dutch Schultz and even becomes his protégé. Gangster films, like westerns, have so many cinematic plus points built in... Full review
Misunderstood: A "Male Movie"

Duke Savage - imdb.com
In a time when gangster films were becoming witty, stylish, and bloody (ie, Reservoir Dogs), a film like Billy Bathgate was ill timed. I've read the comments index here, and it seems as if everyone missed the point entirely. Several people... Full review
Not an "abrupt ending" - a respectable gangster flick
Jul 30, 1999
Thomas Hilton - imdb.com
Some review comments about it having an "abrupt ending" were peculiar since the ending was HISTORICAL. The chop house shooting happened. The characters could have been drawn better, much better, especially regarding motivations. Perhaps this is why people were left unsatisfied... Full review
"I'm not his girl, he's my gangster."

This is one of my favorite gangster movies. Perhaps because it is so uniquely different from other successful films of this genre, it has been derided as a failure. Step back from the likes of The Godfather, Goodfellas, The Sopranos, and... Full review
